All topics related to atheism, agnosticism and secular living are welcome. Being black and a atheist self. Im no stranger to the ostrizatuon of friends and family. Any fellow minority atheists with shareable experiences on the topic. I'm a gay atheist.
My brother relays the things my family says behind my back and it's pretty soul crushing to be quite honest, but I'm dealing with what I've got and hoping to make more progress over time. I call them my parents. They may not always be right, but they only wish the best for me and have raised me to be a responsible adult who has his own head but will still try to make them proud. Was waaaay too angry at the time to think of anything like this lol. Yeah, I get it, it's the "perfect comeback 2 days later while showering"-phenomenon.
Damn, I never realized before I got on here just how easy I have it. My immediate family is all atheist, as well as most of my extended family, except for my grandparents, who are very respectful of our beliefs and still support gay marriage and whatnot. I am so sorry that your family doesn't accept who you are. Go figure. I feel for you! I'm a gay, black atheist. I was forced out as gay and an atheist simultaneously to my parents and got twice the backlash.
More church, lost all my personal belongings, bible studies every night, etc. Rough times. Haha that's why I picked it!
I was mostly joking though. Game boy advance was my childhood :. Be strong. Make some good, like minded friends who will enrich your life. These are the things that matter in life - people. Hopefully, in the future you will be surrounded by people who appreciate your personal integrity, and you them and then you can look back with complete satisfaction knowing that you did the right thing. I'm not black myself, but I'm interested in helping you not feel so alone. If you Google "black atheists" you will find quite a lot of information, including an article in Wikipedia: Atheism in the African diaspora which lists some organizations at the bottom.
I've found that no matter what kind of problem you have, it helps to be in contact with other people who have the same problem. Here's an organization I happen to have bookmarked: African Americans for Humanism.
Their home page lists several historical and living prominent African-American "humanists, freethinkers, and nonbelievers. African-American atheists. African-American agnostics. There's a statue of him in Boston's Back Bay Station. I get that he's associated with the railroad, but man, he should be in Boston Garden or Boston Common.
Happy to see James Baldwin on the front page, his documentary last year narrarated by Samuel L Jackson was amazing. There's an interesting podcast episode that Seth Andrews did on the Thinking Atheist podcast regarding Atheism in Black Culture, I recommend you look it up and watch it, it was extremely interesting and provided some perspectives I'd never considered before.
I will NEVER understand the black communities obsession and acceptance of the religion that was forced upon them and used to justify their enslavement. You want to talk about stockholm syndrome to the extreme.
Black atheist dating sites
Me either. It's mind boggling to see a black individual bend over backwards defending passages in the Old Testament about slavery.
Especially if they're old enough to remember the civil rights movement and can point back on their family tree to enslaved ancestors. I truly don't know what to say to people like that. I can, but I'm pretty sure it's against reddit rules, even if it's just to prove a point. They wouldn't have ever been Christian had they not been enslaved and brought across the ocean, have their home colonized by white imperialists, or in less grim scenarios, missionized by whites.
They excuse it like any good Christian, with half-truths about slavery back then being indentured servitude and cognitive dissonance.
Yeah but why would the Bible give you directions on how best to beat your "indentured servant s "? To be fair, it played an immense role in 19th century abolitionism and 20th century civil rights Say hi any time you want to.
Hey bro, this helped me with dealing with some strong emotions through tough times when I felt all hope was lost:. Good lord, the baby thing. What is it about being an adult that suddenly means you now must start having kids of your own? I never understood that. Some people are perfectly happy child-free. And that doesn't even necessarily mean you don't like kids.
Black Atheists Explain What It's Like to Be a 'Double Minority'
It's just you don't want your own. We do. Women who don't want children are told they should wait to have their tubes tied, to get a hysterectomy, etc. Born and raised on Guam a primarily catholic island. My family refuses to believe I'm atheist. I agree, it has way too strong of a hold in our communities. Our cities and neighborhoods suffer while we build nice churches by the dozen. Most of us are a superstitious lot that have no problem placing our lives and money in the hands of charlatans.
Its disheartening. White guy and very much not a minority. Except I'm married to a black woman, which, I don't know, makes me tangentially near what you're looking for? My wife is not an atheist, though she is not very religious.
We go down south and visit her family often. I like them all, but shudder to think how they would react if they knew.
Particularly her Jehovah's witness mother.
Who's downstairs at this moment, staying with us to help with the new baby. It's not very active, but maybe a good place to start? Mexican and atheist, my extended family is very conservative, if they ever found out, I would probably be out of all the wills and testaments faster than you can say excommunication.
There's an indie hip-hop artist named Tombstone da DeadmanI really like his music and he shares the frustration about how being black and atheist is highly unusual in America. Tyler the Creator is a black atheist artist as well. I don't know his music that well though. That album is awesome. Another artist to check out would be Greydon Square.
He has collabed with Tombstone before. To say it sucks would be a grand understatement. Dating is impossible. Like over drinks or something. Maybe catch a show after. I'm liking it, but then again I've only been here for 3 months. I have noticed that people tend to like the "flashy" lifestyle here more than in Texas where I grew up though.
What did you hate about it? Where in the south? I can say that Tennessee is without a doubt the worst. We're not identical but I understand where you're coming from. I'm half and half black and white and atheist. I was raised by old catholic white people that I'm proud to call my family so for most of my childhood I blindly accepted religion until I was 16 or 17 but I kept my mouth shut out of fear of disappointing them.
Eventually I moved away for school and the Marine Corps and I believe they just came to the conclusion that I'd drifted from the way they raised me. They weren't at all disappointed and we didn't have much of a conversation about it. They asked if I was going to church with them once while I was home, I said "eh" and stayed home.
We talked to five black atheists about what it's like to be black in America dating back to Frederick Douglass's time and blossoming during the. This is why we've brought you numerous atheist dating websites where you can openly talk about your opinions and connect with those who. Countries know since respond to you don't want black atheist dating sites children are still treated with respect and a good dose of learning.
Once they returned my grandpa only asked that I keep my moral bearing based on what they'd taught me and that was the end of it.
However, my extended family on either side with some exceptions was a little less ideal. I'm not black enough for the black folks, and too black and even sometimes too white for the white folks for a variety of reasons. Eventually I came to realize that it doesn't matter in the fucking least. I surround myself with other people that are interested in the same things as me and that's what keeps me happy. The way people perceive you doesn't mean shit.
Be happy with and for yourself. Sorry to be so wordy. Logic is doing a pretty solid job right now. I'm sure there's other people with a respectable platform that I just dont know about but he comes to mind.
Childish Gambino has made a point of pointing issues like that out although hes not mixed. Well I am from a really conservative community of muslims, and I can't even fathom the idea of coming out to my family about not believing anymore. I live in North Africa. I can't say I can relate, I'm fairly isolated from community and pretty darn white.Mandisa Thomas: Black Nonbeliever
It does feel odd though to talk to some of the fundie Christian people I know and have to keep quite about being bisexual even though I'm comfortable saying I'm agnostic to the ones I trust, so I kinda understand the sectionality. It helps to find people like you- I would suggest looking up black atheist groups or individuals, or if you live in a predominantly black neighborhood see if there's an atheist or humanist group around.
The fundies tend to look at us like we're crazy or that we have a disease. Plus I swear that some women legitimately think that because I'm bi, I'm interested in them. Lol no, Barbara, I'm not into 65yo religious ladies. Commenting for support! I'm a bi black atheist. I prefer twitter for this.
Since I was raised with a strong "spiritual" practice, I feel a strong craving for that still. The thing about religion is that the spiritual practice sort of let's you explore emotions, desires, and feelings in a socially sanctioned way. Not saying this is healthy or the most effective means of being self-aware, but a "relationship with god" is just a long road to a "relationship" with yourself. I still struggle with feeling isolated due to my beliefs Either way, it's difficult going through life without people who "get" you.
My mom is very much into traditional native religion. Sweats, inipis, carries a chunupa pipe.
That sucks. Try hobbies to find friends that will support you based on your character, not skin color or belief. True, but I wanna be apart of changing the culture. It begins in my circle of influence and how I raise any children I bear.
Race is a social construct. The world would be a better place if there was more acceptance that we're all mongrels. You come from a culture that reveres faith in christian tenets but that doesn't prevent you from growing beyond those boundaries. Moreover, by virtue of your humanity you have inherited the gifts of every culture. Without culture, and the relative freedom it implies, society, even when perfect, is but a jungle.
This is why any authentic creation is a gift to the future. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. James Baldwin rejected Christianity on the grounds that it encourages complacency and submission. Of course. Mental slavery is dangerous indeed.
This has always bothered me slaves were indoctrinated into Christianity in order to control them. The bible literally told slaves to obey their masters, they were told from birth to pray for their masters.
I'm gay black and atheist too damn, we need a acronym lol. .. An i know what you mean about dating, it's hard when most of the people. It makes dating BW harder since religious is very important to many. . I have never had a problem dating as a black atheist woman. I don't. Whilst other atheist dating sites cater exclusively for atheist singles, they're a little too niche to attract a steady stream of new members and guarantee you'll find.
I really wish people would read that damn book, because once you truly read it belief in it is not likely. Edit: Oh crap, I just checked the dictionary and it says race is a social construct.
Guess I was wrong That is wrong. There are slight genetic differences between each race, but all 'races' can still procreate with one another. I am a white male, and I hate the idea of a genetically superior race. It's really cultural differences that separate us all. Hence, the social construct mentioned before. Race is a social invention, not genetic or real whatsoever.
The word you might be looking for is ethnicity which is genealogical, not genetic, the difference being that what matters is the geographical and social situation of one's ancestors, not one's actual genetic makeup. In what races do you believe and how do you define them biologically? On your profile and in your search criteria, you can specify your religious and spiritual preferences, or lack thereof, and Match will deliver compatible suggestions right to your inbox.
